Spring / Nature Finds

At Crayon Power this year, we found so much joy and learning in our big paper tree in our main classroom. We explored the changing of the seasons through craft, story, and observation. We had colorful leaves in the autumn, had them fall off during the winter, decorated with twinkle lights, snow and ice, and were just about to add flowers for spring!

Although much of life has suddenly changed and even stopped, Spring has not! It is in full bloom all around us. Asking your children, “how do we know it’s Spring?” and observing the changes is a wonderful activity. Here are some suggested activities to support these conversations:


”Spring hunt” walk and photo activity

On your next walk, actively look for signs of spring! Feel the warmer weather, notice what you’re wearing (no more winter hats and gloves perhaps!), see and smell the flowers, notice the green color popping up around the neighborhood on trees and plants and bushes, listen for the birds, and more.

Offer your children the chance to be photographer or art director either taking the photos themselves or telling you what to take photos of. Create an album or slideshow of your signs of Spring and review together. Ask your child to “teach” another member of your family how they know it’s Spring!

2. Nature Finds table

Explore the outside and ask your child to make a spring nature table. Flowers, twigs, leaves, grass, rocks, bark, feathers... whatever your child finds and is beautiful or interesting to them, they can bring in and display on a small table inside. If overwhelmed, you can set a limit for ‘5’ items or so. Invite them to discuss why they picked each item and ask its significance. Observe how they chose to display the items as well. Aesthetics is an important language of expression!
